This sea urchin–shaped work began during my time at an industrial manufacturing company.

A factory is a place designed to produce objects efficiently for predetermined purposes. In such a place, it is hard to reach toward things that are unnecessary, impractical, or seemingly useless.

Even so, I formed a small group with colleagues to explore things that had no clear function but somehow caught our attention. Our first project was to 3D scan a bakudan-uni, a sea urchin whose Japanese name means “bomb urchin.”

Before long, I wanted to wear the 3D-printed urchin on my head, and then to remake it in ceramic. When I came face to face with the finished piece, it felt as if I had encountered a relic from an unknown civilisation.

Though its form comes from a living creature, it has a strangely inorganic, unfamiliar presence. It belongs fully neither to nature, nor to industry, nor to the world of handmade things. It seems to sit slightly outside our usual ideas of usefulness and value.

This work became the starting point for a wider series using digital fabrication, including 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC machining.
